iDeCo & DC Pension: Retirement Planning in Japan

LIFE IN JAPAN · Updated 7 November 2026

For Bangladeshis working in Japan, retirement planning can sit alongside remittances and everyday savings. iDeCo is an individual defined-contribution pension. Employer-sponsored DC is a related but separate arrangement; their contribution and tax rules should not be treated as identical.

How it works

You contribute within your permitted limit and select investments. Reinvested returns can compound, but market investments may lose value. Charges apply. A retirement account is not a guarantee of profit or a substitute for accessible emergency savings.

Check your contribution limit first

Eligibility and limits depend on your pension category and employer arrangements. ¥50,000 per month is not available to every employee. From 1 December 2026, contribution rules change, including a ¥62,000 common monthly ceiling for category-2 participants and employer pension arrangements; this is not automatically an individual ¥62,000 iDeCo allowance. Confirm your own available amount with the provider.

A hypothetical 30-year illustration

If your rules permit ¥50,000 monthly contributions for 360 months, the amount contributed is ¥18,000,000. With contributions at each month-end and assumed monthly compounding at a nominal annual 5% or 7%, the illustrative balance is approximately ¥41.6 million or ¥61.0 million. These are calculations, not forecasts, and exclude fees, inflation and taxes on receipt.

Tax savings are separate

Eligible personal iDeCo contributions reduce taxable income. At a simplified combined marginal tax rate of 20%, an eligible annual contribution of ¥600,000 would suggest ¥120,000 annual tax savings. An unchanged 30-year assumption totals ¥3.6 million nominally. Rates, taxable income and eligibility can change. This cash saving is not automatically invested in the pension or added to its account balance. Benefits on receipt may be taxable after applicable deductions.

Access, work changes and returning home

Funds are generally unavailable before 60; shorter participation can delay the benefit age. Part-time status alone does not establish eligibility. Job changes require procedures; leaving employer DC without arranging a transfer within six months can cause automatic transfer and charges. If returning to Bangladesh, check contribution eligibility and provider procedures before departure. Leaving Japan does not automatically permit withdrawal. An exceptional lump-sum withdrawal requires every statutory condition to be met; otherwise assets usually remain for retirement, subject to investment performance and fees.
